Vision

Our vision is for Wellington to be recognised globally as the best city in the world for mountain biking.

Our primary strategy is to deliver the initiatives contained in the 10-year business plan which sets out investment needed for Wellington to be recognised as the world’s best mountain bike city (Wellington Trails Business Plan). The Wellington Trails Business Plan was funded by WCC in 2015.

Achieving this bold vision requires leveraging a range of factors that make Wellington unique and are at the heart of our competitive advantage as a city. This includes our stunning natural environment and the connectivity between the trail network and the city. We believe there is no other city in the world that has comparable mountain biking experiences so close to a cool urban city. This point of difference, if leveraged appropriately, is why tourists, visitors and new residents will come to Wellington.

The key benefits to Wellington of a world-class urban multi user trail network include:

  • Providing all Wellington residents with greater access to a world-class recreational resource (for walkers, runners, mountain bikers, nature lovers, trampers).
  • Bringing more visitors and tourists to Wellington.
  • Playing a key role in supporting smart and sustainable economic growth, particularly through attracting and retaining talented people to Wellington.
  • The trail network and associated biking activity contributing to the development of transport choices for an efficient and sustainable transport network.
  • Health benefits to Wellington citizens.

Today Wellington city has over 100 kilometres of existing mountain biking trails that connect to the urban and suburban environs. The close proximity of this trail network to the city centre and suburbs creates a unique point of difference not just in New Zealand but globally.

While mountain biking in Wellington is good, it is not world class. Having once been New Zealand’s home of mountain biking, Wellington is now falling behind other cities and regions that have made large investments into their trail networks and supporting facilities.

To move to being recognised globally as the best city in the world for mountain biking requires leveraging Wellington’s existing trail network. There are a number of gaps that have been identified that need to be filled, including entry-level family trails and iconic rides in and around the city. The development of these trails also needs to be considered in the context of WCC designing Wellington’s on and off-road cycle network, which is a key requirement needed to ensure that cycling can become a major future transport option for Wellington residents.

Examples of other gaps include marketing, signage and iconic events.

Our Plan

The Wellington Trails Business Plan identified a number of short term and long-term initiatives considered necessary in order for the world’s best mountain bike city vision to be achieved. Private sector funding, financial support from WCC (and possible central government funding) is key to this vision being successfully achieved.

Funding and Partnerships

WCC have committed their support to WTT. We see the Wellington Trails Business Plan being delivered through a public-private partnership. WTT will be the entity to raise funds from NZ private sector organisations that have an interest in seeing:

  • Wellington economic growth;
  • The development of an improved Wellington trail network that is designed to support mountain bikers, walkers and runners.

Trail Network

WTT will work with WCC on key trail network initiatives that include:

  • A 5 year roadmap for trail development for Wellington city and the wider region that supports the vision;
  • The development and completion of trails to fill some of the existing gaps (e.g. developing grade 2-3 urban/family trails and a Grade 5-6 iconic trail);
  • Feasibility assessment of regional interconnected trail networks for epic rides;

WTT will work with existing Wellington mountain bike clubs and charities (eg Makara Peak, Brooklyn Trail Builders, Miramar and Wellington Mountain Bike Club) as regards investment and completion of any track work in their areas of interest.

  • High profile brand visibility.
  • Attracts talented people to live and work in Wellington.
  • Direct and indirect benefits from increased tourism and increased migration of outdoor loving people to Wellington.
  • Benefits of happy healthy staff, families and fellow Wellington citizens.
  • Creates a world-class community asset for the benefit of all Wellington residents, including walkers, runners, mountain bikers, trampers, and nature lovers.
